You might have heard about Yell Website Design Services. You might even use Yell services for your small business. But if you’re on the verge of deciding whether to purchase a Yell website and whether it is right for your business or not, then keep reading.
As a small business owner, you know your website is one of the most important elements of your digital marketing and presence. It is the first thing your potential customers see when they search for your products or services and it should be modern and reflect your business
If your website does not look the part you may look untrustworthy and are likely to lose business. In fact, 75% of website credibility comes from design.
So deciding who you work with to build and design your website is an important decision that can make or break your business. In this blog post, we will take a look at website design packages from Yell.com as well as Web Design Southampton.
Using Yell Website Design Services
Poor Quality Web Design
Yell.com offers Web Design Services for small businesses and uses Wix to create those websites. However, many Yell websites are using very outdated designs, which are rarely optimised for mobile devices – and not optimised for mobile.
You don’t own your website
When you have your business website built with Yell, you cannot host your website with any other company, you will always have to pay Yell as long as you want the website to be live. This means that if you stop paying that monthly fee to Yell, they will remove your website. And you will never have the full rights to own your website.
Misleading Pricing
Yell website design service presents itself as cheap. However, it’s anything but. On average Yell.com websites start at £400 + vat and go as high as £4000 + vat. This does not include the monthly management fee (between £30 and £75 per month), hosting (£96 per month), premium listings on Yell.com (£265 per month) or advertising services. One of our clients we recently helped paid around £900 per month for various services which, suffice to say, did not deliver.
Agressive sales process
Yell has a sales team and uses tactics to get the contract signed before you hang up the call. When Yell calls you, you’re very likely to be offered a ‘special discount’ if you sign up for Yell website design services immediately on the call. However, the moment you agree, you’re locked into a 12-month contract without a cooling-off period and a way to cancel.
No Google Analytics
If you do manage Yell to set up Google Analytics to your website, you will not have access to it. Instead, Yell sends you simplified monthly reports. It is also very difficult to set up any conversion tracking, such as Google Tag Manager.
What’s more, when you want PPC advertising, Yell adds a 40% management fee to every click, this means you’re paying 40% of your budget to Yell and will always be outbid by your competitors. And you cannot access Google Analytics to accurately measure the results of your campaign.
Poor SEO
Google loves fresh content, and websites that are regularly updated with good quality content will rank much higher than static sites. However, with a Yell website, you cannot make any changes yourself – you have to request the changes by email or by phone.
Yell Marketing Service
As We’ve said previously, Yell offers its customers sponsored listings on yell.com, PPC ads, social media advertising and SEO (they call it ‘Connect’).
The pricing for some of the marketing services would look like this:
- £40 per month – Connect
- £500 per month – PPC + Maintenance
- £256 per month – Sponsored listing on Yell.com position #1
You would be paying a lot of money and with no analytics, it is hard to tell what is working and what is not.
Lack of support
Yell has support call teams all around the world: the UK, US, Spain, India, Peru and more. And as you might think, getting support is a nightmare. We had a customer who wanted Google Analytics to be installed on their website, and it took Yell one month to get that sorted. This is usually a 5 – 10 minute job.
So, what are your options when it comes to your small business website design? You need a professional web design agency that knows how to design and build optimised, mobile-friendly websites that will help you rank higher on Google and convert your visitors into customers.

It also boosts search engine optimisation, as Google’s ranking algorithm supports websites that have responsive designs.
